Here is How to Make Sure You Get a Great Tattoo

April 16th, 2010

Do you really know how good that person who is just about to put a permanent work of art on your skin really is? Most people make the mistake of just using the first person they come to when they want a tattoo, and I appreciate that a lot of tattoos are spur of the moment decisions so you don’t have much time to decide. But if you really want a great tattoo then encourage you to take a step back and think long and hard about the design and the tattoo artist before you do anything.

Just like with any profession then there are vastly different skill levels across the industry, and take it from someone who has experienced the horror of working with a really bad tattoo artist, then spending a little extra time to research where you are going to have it done will save you a lifetime of regret later.

A great place to start looking for someone to trust with your tattoo is amongst your friends. As so many people have tattoos nowadays then there is a good chance that someone you know will have a tattoo that they can show you. Then you can ask them how it went, if they liked the person, if the artist changed parts of the design without telling them, and you can look at the outline because a poorly done outline means parts of it will grow out and it will be all patchy.

Another great place to look is online tattoo forums, you can ask in there if people near you have had any good or bad experiences with artists, and you have a much bigger pool or people to draw on then. Ask for pictures of tattoos from people so you can look at the level of detail in them and how well they are formed, don’t just rely on them saying they are happy with the end result, because you might not be.

The last place to look if you are going to have a really big and detailed tattoo is in tattoo magazines, there you’ll find features on some of the top artists in the country and you get to see their studio, their previous work and see what awards they have won. You will probably have to travel to get to their studio, and you are going to pay more for an award winning artist, but at least you’ll know you are in the best hands and that your tattoo is going to really rock.

I know this sounds like a lot of work just for a tattoo when you can nip down the road and start having one done in no time at all, but if you have a bad tattoo done then your only options are to have it removed with a laser, cut off (ouch!) or have it covered over. I would much rather spend the time up front finding someone I can trust rather than spending time and money later trying to correct it!

If you are scared of getting a tattoo because you think it will hurt a lot, then stomach tattoos are probably the kind that hurt the least because there is no bone to catch on and there is lots of fat and muscle.
