Tattoos have a long history in most cultures throughout the world. While in some cultures, tattoos have had an unpleasant connotation, in many others they are rights of passage, amongst many other lovely traditions
While fine art tattoo work has only seen a rebirth since the mid 1980s, it is important to know that in excess of fifty million people bear a tattoo of some sort in the United States. While exact numbers are not available, there is a rapid growth within Europe as well.
What used to be the realm of bikers, and gangs and criminals is now the domain of anyone who wishes to express themselves in a unique way. It should come as no surprise that many of our celebrities, from rock stars, to soccer icons, to movie stars are sporting their own statements to the world. There are some types of tattoos we would not recommend getting (not many, but a few).
Rock stars, sporting icons, movie stars are sporting their own statements to the world. Our criteria when reviewing tats is who has unexpected, exceptional tattoos? Here is a list of some of our favourite inked celebrities and a couple we just had to shake our heads at.
Angelina Jolie is a committed woman, this shows by the fact that she has her children and husband Brad Pitt, tattooed on her body. Not to be outdone though, she also bares a fine Asian Dragon on her lower back as well. All of her tattoos have an intimate connection with her, and oddly enough, we cant imagine her having a feminine tattoo anywhere on her!
Amy Winehouse has an array of tattoos, although they dont seem to follow any rhyme or reason. However this singer certainly shows that you dont have to follow a theme. Wondering if Angel Wing Tattoos are going to be next, then again where would she put them?
David Beckham, Englands Golden Boy of Soccer also sports multiple tattoos. In his autobiography, My Side he speaks at length about each pieces meaning and symbolism to him. A very interesting read.
Nicole Riche has approximately nine tattoos and we are just waiting to see if an Aztec tattoos is in her future.
Lil Wayne leads the list of Rappers for tattoos. While he is heavily tattooed, each one lends itself back to his past, a real gangsta feel both in meaning and artwork.
In keeping with her husband, David Beckham, Victoria has a couple inked spots as well. Stars on her lower back representing her family and DB on her left wrist.
What good can anyone say about Britney Spears and her ink? She does have a number of small tattoos, but they are pretty much just flash.
Lindsay Lohan takes a practical approach to her tattoos. There is one word on the inside of her left wrist. Breathe. This could be either thought provoking, or a simple reminder to herself for those really tough times. Lindsay also serves as one of the greatest advocates for ink work on females.
Celebrities that tattoo themselves with what is important in their life, what is meaningful to them rate number 1 with us. Alyssa Milano is one of those celebrities.
Then there is everyones favourite pirate. Johnny Depp is not ashamed to admit that all of his tattoos pay homage to his lifes achievements and destinations that he has visited. This seems quite a tribute to a mans dreams.
Keep in mind, that you dont have to be a celebrity to get tattoos. While there are many that have had ink work done-draw on them for inspiration.
